PSY 3508 Supervised Practicum & Fieldwork in Addiction Studies

This course provides the opportunity to gain experience with diverse populations in a supervised addiction treatment setting approved by California Southern University. The application of knowledge and skills is essential to gain competency in the field of addiction counseling. The supervised fieldwork course is comprised of two main components: course work (90 hours) and individual experience under the supervision of a qualified, credentialed professional, at an approved placement, for a total of at least 255 hours of practical experience within the 12 core functions of addiction counseling. Trainees must complete a required 3 hours agency orientation (3 hours), plus a minimum of 21 hours in each of the following 12 Core functions: screening (21 hours); intake (21 hours); orientation (21 hours); assessment (21 hours); treatment planning (21 hours); counseling (21 hours); case management (21 hours); crisis intervention (21 hours); client education (21 hours); referral (21 hours); reports and record keeping (21 hours); and consultation with other professionals (21 hours). Please note: This equates to a minimum of 255 hours of specific supervised fieldwork experience. Satisfactory completion of all activities, all hours within each of the core functions, and all documents is required to successfully complete this course. The final grade for this course will either be Satisfactory (S) or Unsatisfactory (U). Counselor Skill Groups addressed by this course include: clinical intake and screening; clinical assessment; treatment plan; counseling services; documentation; case management; discharge and continuing care; and legal, ethical, and professional development.
