PSY 8508 Psychotherapy Techniques II

This course, the second in the Techniques of Psychotherapy sequence, covers the basic principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and its evidence of effectiveness on a variety of psychiatric disorders, while attending to cultural considerations. Beck’s original model focused on cognitive distortions and behavioral interventions, within the framework of a strong therapeutic relationship. The field has evolved considerably, and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and other cognitive behavioral techniques also will be explored.
