Residency Requirements and Attendance
The Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology program includes a residency option that consists of in-person courses and required activities. Courses taken in residency will also include online requirements. The residency provides opportunities to apply clinical skills and integrate knowledge from clinical practice, evidence-based treatment, and psychological assessment. Learners that reside in certain jurisdictions are required to attend in-person residencies.
Full attendance at each residency is mandatory. The residency includes a minimum number of hours of formally scheduled face-to-face instruction and professional interaction with program faculty and learners; learners must be present for all required residency hours in order to pass the course. These are associated with specific online courses that include an “R” in the course number. Formally scheduled residency experiences take place over a period not to exceed 12 months and are scheduled by CalSouthern monthly from January through October to meet such timeline requirements. Each residency spans three full days (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). New learners can expect to attend their first residency in the second year of the program, though the University reserves the right to adjust the scheduling of the residency as necessary.
Learners will be charged a residency fee (see Learner Fees) for each residency course attended, in addition to course tuition. This fee covers a range of costs associated with the in-person residency experience, such as academic programming and in-person instruction. It also encompasses planning and on-site logistical support including but not limited to testing kits, hardware and software, IT assistance, security, and lunch for participants. The fee does not cover travel and lodging; learners are responsible for travel and other personal expenses incurred as part of their attendance at these sessions.
Learners must also complete the following requirements for PSY 7762-R which is designated as a residency course, but does not require attendance at an on-site session at CalSouthern. Instead, the learner must attend 25 hours of conferences, workshops, or seminars approved by the American Psychological Association. Documentation will be required, including the hours of attendance. The learner is responsible for all costs associated with meeting this course requirement. The learner must also complete 25 hours of standardized/simulated patient experience as part of this course, that will be facilitated by the University.
If a PsyD-Clinical Psychology learner that resides in a jurisdiction that requires the in-person residency does not attend the scheduled residency session(s) and/or does not meet attendance requirements at the residency, the learner will receive a grade of non-passing with the course(s) associated with the in-person residency and will be required to repeat the course with the residency component. Learners who meet the in-person residency attendance and requirements but do not pass the asynchronous component(s) of the associated course(s) will not be required to repeat the residency session, however they will be required to retake the course. See Minimum Passing Grade and Repeated Courses section of this catalog for more information regarding repeated courses. Learners needing to repeat a course(s) or residency session(s) will be subject to scheduling availability in order to repeat, which may cause a delay in program progression. As such, learners may be subject to administrative dismissal from the program if unable to meet these program requirements within the timeframe specified. See the Course Scheduling section of the PsyD-CP program page for additional information.
